The Importance of Senior Pet Wellness Care

Family Pet Hospital of Stone Oak knows how important your pet companion becomes to you over the years. We want you to know that we give senior pets the extra special care they deserve.

When is your pet considered a senior pet? Just as no two pets are alike, “senior” status varies according to breed and your pet’s life experiences. Generally, dogs 8 years of age and over are considered senior. Giant breeds like Mastiffs or Great Danes achieve this status sooner. Toy breeds may not be considered senior until they are 9 or 10. Cats are classified as senior when they reach the age of 10 years.

Your pet will continue to have regular, twice yearly exams unless there is a medical problem that needs closer monitoring. As your pet ages, we will recommend blood work, urinalysis, and intestinal parasite screening and will discuss any possible health problems such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Kidney and liver function
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid problems
  • Parasites
  • Hypertension

Because it is important for your senior pet to maintain a healthy weight, we will guide you on the best diet. Some pets require special foods to either lose or maintain their weight or manage other health issues. We can also recommend some supplements for improved joints and skin.

If your pet is suffering from arthritis, we can show you how lifestyle changes can make a difference. For instance, your pet may need to cut back on the distance that he runs on pavement and increase swimming. An exercise program can have great results, and laser therapy and anti-inflammatory regimens can be tailored to your pet as needed.
